You know what’s stressful? First time meeting your loved one's parents. More stressful? Meeting each other’s parents for the first time and introducing them to each other as you all spend the weekend together in a rental house out in the country. Now, picture the house being haunted. That’s the grade B set-up for a grade A cast in “The Parenting,” about 20 percent comedy, 30 percent relationships, and 50 percent horror.
A brief prologue takes place in 1983, when a mother is watching the final episode of "M*A*S*H" while cooking dinner in her avocado-green kitchen while wearing a lace bib and a dress with poofy shoulders. Something sinister takes her, her teenage son, and her daughter away. Then we are in the present day (cue a song by Dua Lipa). Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn) are the young couple who are organizing the getaway to meet the parents. Rohan is a bit of a perfectionist who is determined to ensure that each and every detail is perfect. This means that Josh won't tell his parents that he plans to try to make it as a musician after losing his job. Also, Rohan has told their best friend Sarah (Vivian Bang) that he plans to propose at the right time. Rohan and Josh are so delighted with the great deal they got on the beautiful house that they are more amused than creeped out by Brenda (Parker Posey), who is there to greet them. When she informs them that during their stay, the annual Worm Moon, a spring full moon said to represent restoring equilibrium, will occur, they pay little attention. The circle that has been scratched into the entryway floor goes unnoticed by them. And then there’s no time to notice anything because the parents arrive. Rohan’s parents are not-comfortable-talking-about-feelings Frank (Brian Cox) and judgy-and-more-than-willing-to-explain-why Sharon (Edie Falco). Liddy, played by Lisa Kudrow, and Cliff, played by Dean Norris, are Josh's friends. The three couples’ initial moments together are awkward and uncomfortable.
Then, Josh accidentally walks in on Sharon in the bathroom. He believes that will be the most frightening and traumatic event of the weekend. Not at all. He takes three marijuana chews and places the fourth one in his pocket. However, when something grabs his leg under the dinner table, that is not enough to keep him calm. The truly eerie things don't start until the next morning. Frank appears strange and pale. Frank is asked by Josh to pass the bread knife. Josh's arm is slashed instead by Frank. After that, a slew of unsettling events begin.
